My essay is going to be about Robonaut2, because I am very interested in these kinds of topics.
Robonaut2 is the newer sibling of Robonaut, a robot previously created by NASA to do the same types of tasks that human spacewalkers do. Robounaut2 or R2 (is a faster) was being developed for three years by NASA, GM and with help of engineers from Oceaneering Space Systems of Houston. R2 is a faster, more dexterous and more technologically advanced robot. GM and NASA say that they have jointly developed a robot, which can be used to develop advanced safety systems for future vehicles and assist astronauts on missions. Robounaut2 is capable to work safely alongside people, a necessity both on Earth and in space and go where the risks are too great for people.
The Robonaut2 practically looks like as a human, because it was built to replicate the appearance of a human from the waist up so that it can work in same spaces, doing the jobs as people do. R2 replicates a human torso, head, arms, hands and fingers. GM and NASA examinate various mobility solutions such as legs, because robots are working on the International Space Station and they need to attach themselves.
The idea of using human-like robots capable of using their „hands“ to do a work is not new. The original humanoid robot, which was designed for space travel, was built at Johnson in a collaborative effort with the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency 10 years ago. In spite of the fact that the NASA and GM have a long, rich history of partnering on key technologies, which started in the 1960s with the development of the navigation systems for the Apollo missions and GM also played a vital role in the development of the Lunar Rover Vehicle (the first vehicle to be used on the moon) I am convinced that this invention is one of the most important.
To sum up, I suppose that R2 will be very usefull.
